Contact dermatitis is skin inflamation caused by allergens, irritants, or triggered by UV light.

Cause
  • Irritant contact dermatitis
  • Allergic contact dermatitis, including:
    • Nickel
    • 14K or 18K gold
    • Balsam of Peru (Myroxylon pereirae)
    • Chromium
    • Oily coating from the plants of the Toxicodendron genus, including poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac
  • Photocontact dermatitis
Dx
  • Patch test to identify responsible agent, so it can be avoided

Tx
  • Avoid irritant
  • Protective clothing and gloves to mitigate exposure with irritant
  • Relieve itching, with calamine lotion, or oral antihistamines
  • Avoid scratching which can complicate with neurodermatitis
  • Combat inflammation, with topical corticosteroids
